2019 HUNGER ACTION DAY

“Every day I fight for my existence. In California, we have to fight for everything we have. You can’t be quiet about it.” —Barbara

Join St. Anthony’s and the California Hunger Action Coalition in Sacramento on Wednesday, May 22nd for the annual Hunger Action Day. Held at the height of the California Legislative and Budget session, Hunger Action Day brings hundreds of advocates, clients, and community members from across the state to rally and demand change for those in need.

Why participate in Hunger Action Day?

Over 4,500,000 people in California are struggling to maintain a regular source of adequate, nutritious food. In San Francisco, 1 in 5 adults lacks the resources to provide food for their families, and in the Tenderloin district, that number is as high as 1 in 2. At St. Anthony’s, we help by serving nearly one million meals every year in addition to advocating on behalf of those we serve. It’s time for legislators to prioritize ending poverty and hunger in the state budget and support food security legislation.

Let’s advocate

Participants will have plenty of time to learn more about food insecurity and the specific issues being discussed both prior to the event and during Hunger Action Day. While many attendees will share their stories, there is no pressure to ever speak or discuss your background, if you do not want to. The day is for you to make of it what you want. If you do find yourself wanting to share, there will be many opportunities to do so.

Once we arrive in Sacramento, Hunger Action Day will begin with a morning rally on the North Lawn of the State Capitol Building. Then we will split up into small groups and meet with legislators across the Capitol. Those who want to share their personal stories will be able to speak directly with legislators.

In the afternoon, we will gather for an afternoon rally, the presentation of the Hunger Fighter Awards to Senator Weiner and Assemblywoman Wicks, and participate in an open mic for anyone who wants to share their story with the entire audience. We will meet with more legislators later in the day and get to know other advocates until it’s time to head back to St. Anthony’s.
