Back-to-School Giveaway: Helping Kids Start Strong

Earnestine is good at stretching a budget, but sometimes it just isn’t enough. That’s why she’s marked a visit to St. Anthony’s on her calendar this week for the annual back-to-school giveaway that provides backpacks, school supplies and clothing to hundreds of students and their families in the Tenderloin.  

As a single mom raising four daughters, Earnestine remembers the help she found years ago when the girls were young and she had money to cover bills but not much else. St. Anthony’s food pantry, the free clothing program and other resources got her through some challenging times with the help she needed to manage a growing household.  

But this week, it’s all about her grandkids, ages 10, 12 and 15. With classes resuming in just weeks, it’s a scramble to find everything a child needs to start the school year off prepared. And this year, high costs are putting many items out of reach for families with limited means.  

Held over three days, this year’s Back-to-School Giveaway features an outer-space theme, complete with decorations, music and other-worldly activities that transform the experience into a fun celebration. Families can browse clothing, shoes and backpacks while children enjoy the excitement of preparing for a new school year. 

Earnestine says she’s grateful for St. Anthony’s and all the support the staff have given her over the years. A good start to the school year matters, she says, and it’s important for children to have clean clothes, weather-appropriate jackets and coats, and shoes that fit.  

“I don’t know how I would’ve made it without St. Anthony’s,” Earnestine reflects. “This back-to-school giveaway is a blessing. It feels good knowing these kids are starting the year with everything they need, ready and excited for the first day of school.”
