St. Anthony’s welcomes weekly outdoor food pantry to the Greenway

June 30, 2023

Working together to keep an essential neighborhood resource in the Tenderloin, St. Anthony’s has partnered with the San-Francisco-Marin Food Bank to bring the Tenderloin Pop-Up Food Pantry to the Golden Gate Greenway. We started service in June.

Occurring every Monday on the Golden Gate Greenway, this outdoor pantry offers fresh groceries in abundance, enough to supply 500 neighborhood households with supplemental nutrition for the week. San Francisco-Marin Food Bank provides the essential food supplies, dedicated staff, and volunteers to conduct the service, while St. Anthony’s Community Safety Services team ensures that operations run safely for everyone on the shared roadway.

The Pop-up Pantry, originally started during the pandemic and housed three blocks north, was in danger of closing after the road closure on Ellis St ended. The opportunity to rehome the pantry was embraced by St. Anthony’s and the street’s other Golden Gate Greenway Coalition partners. “It’s no surprise that the pantry ended up here.” says Tenderloin resident and pantry participant John M., “This block is unique, and the nonprofits here really know how to make services work for everyone.”

The Pop-up Food Pantry demonstrates the power of collaboration in ending food insecurity in the Tenderloin neighborhood. If you would like to join the collaboration to provide our neighbors with access to food banks, community meal programs, and life-changing programs, you can donate today
