Cheers to a Record-Breaking Penny Pitch!

May 28, 2025

St. Anthony’s welcomed our biggest crowd yet to the 47th Annual Penny Pitch on Friday, May 9th—and thanks to your generosity, raised over $165,000 to support essential services and pathways to stability for our San Francisco neighbors.

This year’s tournament was held in North Beach at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club, where 52 spirited teams gathered for an afternoon of friendly competition, connection, and community. The event was emceed by KNBR’s amazing Brian Murphy. Guests enjoyed cents-sational spritzes, one-cent Bloody Marys, and delicious bites like golden arancini and San Francisco’s iconic It’s-Its passed through the crowd, tasty tortellini, Italian sandwiches and more! Attendees took home St. Anthony’s swag bags filled with San Francisco treats—including fresh Boudin baguettes, generously provided by our friends at Boudin Bakery. It was everything we love about Penny Pitch—joyful, full of heart and playfully competitive.

Kicking off the event, St. Anthony’s CEO Dr. Larry Kwan reflected on the legacy behind the tradition:

“I love the fact that nearly fifty years later, we’re carrying on a tradition that began as a charitable competition just between friends. What’s inspiring is that a community in North Beach decided to support a struggling community in the Tenderloin, and it all started seemingly randomly, with a penny. It gives me faith that larger forces are at work.”

From veteran players to first-time pitchers, the energy was electric. And among our many guests, we were honored to welcome Mayor Daniel Lurie, Senator Scott Wiener, San Francisco Fire Department Chief Dean Crispin, and San Francisco Police Chief William Scott, who all joined in the fun and showed their support for our mission.

As Mayor Lurie shared:

“When I think of St. Anthony’s, I think of them being one of our moral compasses here in San Francisco… We as a city, we lost our way a little bit over the last few years. We’re getting that common sense back, but we are always going to lead with our values—and that is ‘the St. Anthony’s way.’ It’s our city’s way.”

A round of applause for our 2025 champions, The Toboni Group, who took home the coveted Ed and Mary Etta Moose trophy—complete with a martini glass and 75th anniversary pennies as olives!

Shoutouts all around:

  • Second Place: The St. Ignatius Wildcats
  • Best Team Name: Lucky Penny Parking Lot
  • Best Costume: Mo’s Mavens, in loving memory of longtime supporter Maureen Sullivan
  • Best Team Spirit: Penny Pinchers
  • Biggest Losers: Ann’s Team—you may not have won, but those shiny penny rolls are a prize in our book!
