Building Trust, Opening Doors: St. Anthony’s Joins Covered California Press Conference

St. Anthony Foundation CEO Dr. Larry Kwan joined Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Jessica Altman, Executive Director of Covered California, and Daniel Tsai, Director of the San Francisco Department of Public Health for the launch of Covered California’s open enrollment period.

We were honored to stand alongside our partners to emphasize a shared truth: health coverage is the first step toward vitality, housing, work, and long-term stability.

St. Anthony’s Role in the Healthcare Ecosystem

At St. Anthony’s, we see firsthand how access to care transforms lives. As our CEO Dr. Larry Kwan shared, we are not an alternative to the health care system — we are the trusted bridge and on-ramp into it.

Most of our guests qualify for Medi-Cal, and our integrated care team — providers, benefits navigators, counselors, sisters, and friars — walks alongside them to enroll, stay enrolled, and navigate a complex healthcare landscape. For graduates of Father Alfred Center rebuilding their lives through recovery and workforce pathways, Covered California often becomes the next step as they reenter the workforce and earn income.

This is the power of trust and relationship-based care.

Speaker Emerita Pelosi graciously recognized St. Anthony’s role as a beacon of hope and love in San Francisco — referencing our 75th Anniversary Gala last week at City Hall:

“I was just with Dr. Larry Kwan and St. Anthony Foundation at their 75th Anniversary celebration at City Hall. I showed them my ‘faith, hope, and love’ bracelets. I said what they do is love. When people ask me, ‘Where is hope?’ I say it’s right here — where people have faith in the goodness of others. That gives them hope. And that’s what St. Anthony’s is about.”
